plátano

Ryan has been telling me about the plátano that he used to eat on his mission for years. He told me that it was a fruit that looks like a banana, but tastes like a potato. They were his favorite when fried in oil, and eaten with ketchup. In the Dominican Republic, they didn't serve fries in fast food restaurants, instead they served fried plantains (plátano).

When we were grocery shopping on Saturday, he decided it was time to give me a little taste of the food he ate during his two years in the D.R.

First he started by pealing the plantains.
Next he chopped them into wedges

I personally thought they looked and smelled like bananas, and the idea of dipping them in ketchup pretty much freaked me out.
Next you fry them in hot oil
Brown them, smash them until flat, and then fry them again. Healthy snack right?!?
He seasoned them with a little sea salt--just like fries.
And then loved every bite. I thought that they surprisingly did taste alot like fries. Would I trade them for fries when I go out to eat? Probably not, but it was fun to try something new! Ryan and I are doing a 10 week weight loss challenge right now to top it off. Sabotage! (How do you say, "I just gained 10 pounds" in Spanish?")
It was nice to get a break from making dinner...can you tell I needed it? Yep that's me in my pj's, unshowered, wearing glasses. (My kids were bathed, and house was clean, and that's as far as I got yesterday.)
And here is a picture of Addie getting ready to try some plátanos. Sweet pose Addie.
And here is a picture of my sweet baby. Not because it has anything to do with this post, but just because she is so darn cute!

Good job, Ryan!! Blake loves his tortilla de patata from his mission. Pretty much potato pancakes. I love when he makes it. No cooking for me!=)
