Potty Talk.

Addison will be 20 months old next week. We bought her a training toilet a couple of months ago, just so she could practice sitting on it once in a while. I know of some people who have their kids potty trained early, but I haven't seriously tried with her yet.

Last night we bought Addie some Easy Ups for when we start potty training, and she LOVES them. She was so excited to wear her "Doda's " (She is obsessed with Dora right now).
I have been researching online about how to tell if your child is ready to be potty trained, and I found this checklist on BabyCenter.com...

I have put stars by the ones that she can do:

Physical signs
* Is coordinated enough to walk, and even run, steadily.
* Urinates a fair amount at one time.
* Has regular, well-formed bowel movements at relatively predictable times.
Has "dry" periods of at least three or four hours, which shows that his bladder muscles are developed enough to hold urine.
Behavioral signs
* Can sit down quietly in one position for two to five minutes.
Can pull his pants up and down.
Dislikes the feeling of wearing a wet or dirty diaper.
* Shows interest in others' bathroom habits (wants to watch you go to the bathroom or wear underwear).
Gives a physical or verbal sign when he's having a bowel movement such as grunting, squatting, or telling you.
* Demonstrates a desire for independence.
* Takes pride in his accomplishments.
* Isn't resistant to learning to use the toilet.
* Is in a generally cooperative stage, not a negative or contrary one.
Cognitive signs
* Can follow simple instructions, such as "go get the toy."
* Understands the value of putting things where they belong.
* Has words for urine and stool.
Understands the physical signals that mean he has to go and can tell you before it happens or even hold it until he has time to get to the potty.

How do I know when she is ready to start potty training? Are the things that she isn't doing well yet signs that we need to wait longer? Or do I just need to start now and hope she catches on in time?

When did you start potty training your child? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated! :)

my kids were about 2 1/2, ryder was even older and they were trained in 1 day... no accidents. but i totally believe to wait unil they're ready, or you'll have nothing but messes, tears, and frustration...a big thing i wait for is if they can dress themselves....especially bottoms.

WELL.....Hailey was potty trained at barely 2, Spencer is still working on it and 3 and 2 months. He will do the peeing but not the pooing. If you are really going to go for it, then go!!!!!=)

I know I don't have kids so its kind of weird that I am making a comment...but I always have to chuckle when I think about potty training. When I was an au pair in London a few years ago, the mom came to me on Wednesday and said that Peyton was starting preschool and I needed to have her potty trained for when she started....on Friday! It was a hectic two days and Im not even sure how I did it but she was good to go for Friday. I think she was 2 1/2 though.

My girls were about 2 1/2 & boys 3+. I guess I'd much rather change diapers than clean up after a lot of accidents so I felt like it was worth the wait. But whenever you do it..... make sure they flush the toilet every time and not you so they will get in the habit early. I guess I didn't make that clear enough when they were little (or my kids are just regressing)... because I discover way too many unflushed toilets at our house!
